Cupcakes & Fondantflies

This weekend was FULL of colorful sprinkles and butterfly details...

I saw this idea *somewhere* (online? magazine? wilton book?) ...I can't remember but I was dying to try it. Not hard or fancy, but I love the fun playful look that is achieved by rolling the sides of the cupcake frosting in sprinkles:

Saturday night was our marshmallow fondant date night --oh yes, Trevor joined in on the fun!

We made several dozen of these little fluttering beauties...

Pink, purple, & yellow butterflies from MM fondant--I didn't have a small butterfly cookie cutter, so we used a flower cookie cutter and then did some extra cosmetic work after cutting out the shape. We pinched them into butterfly wings and gingerly laid them on their bellies in dainty little rows (on suspended dowel rods). This gave gravity the opportunity to help them solidify mid-flight:
After drying we had our Sunday night activity--detail work on the butterflies, using royal icing (dries hard-as-a-rock). Bodies & little antennae finished the insect project and YESTERDAY I layered 4 cakes on top of each other (vanilla, strawberry, vanilla, strawberry) to finish the BUTTERFLY PRINCESS CAKE:

My goal was to have the illusion of butterflies flying all around & landing on the top of the cake.
Whether or not that goal was met, I'm not quite sure, but I was pleased with the outcome! These butterflies did great, we only had a few casualties. Most of them stayed right in place all the way to party (my friend Leesa's little girl turned 3!).

I'm getting more comfortable working with marshmallow fondant, I'm excited to use it in future cake decorating projects!

Holy COW shara. This is so impressive. I do not have talent in this area and I'm always so impressed with cake decorating and the design that goes into it.

Was that little girl going out of her mind with excitement when she saw the cake? Was her mother? Did her mom order up the cake, as in, did she have any idea how incredible it was going to look?
