Two Friday nights ago we saw the listing
"Kimball Piano For Sale"
There were three photos and one low price: $50
Trevor gave a nod of approval (dark wood stain, under $100, & not an upright) and I called to schedule a time the next day to come see the piece. We drove 45 minutes to check it out (loved the drive along the St. Croix River), plunked a few keys, checked for rust and the color of the pads inside, wrote down a few facts, and handed over a roll of cash. We started making arrangements for pickup on the drive back home. Seven days later this truck was backing into our driveway:
He also repaired the front left leg, dusted the wooden parts on the inside, and gently cleaned off the keys.
It's been a few days now & we still can't stop staring at it in awe--we just love it!
I pulled out our two music books (hymn book & children's song book) and plunked through several songs for fun (anything without a sharp or a flat is good for me...mostly right hand only)--with a roaring applause after each one!
The kids have been taking turns "practicing"
as well...
Guess it's time to find some early piano lesson books to begin a new adventure!
Our new piano...arrived the day before my birthday! Best birthday ever! |
I'm looking forward to playing many "Happy Birthdays" for special days, "I Am A Child of God" and Primary songs for FHEs, "Joy To The World" and more for Christmases, and many, many more as our piano becomes a part of our family tradition.
Trevor & J have both expressed interest in learning. I'm interested in 're-learning' and improving my limited piano skill*. What joy this instrument will bring to our family!
We are so excited to enjoy the sound of music in our home.
*Would you believe me if I told you that my last piano teacher (I was 15-ish--living in Tennessee) lives about 30 minutes from me and we are still in touch? I think I need to call her up and ask her for a refresher lesson!

It's beautiful! And so crazy your piano teacher lives so close. Awesome. Also, pretty sure the nod of approval for me would be: piano? 50 bucks? Heck yes! ;) You say it's not an upright. I thought it was. What would you call it? And why would Trevor disapprove of one? Riddle me this. ;)
It is beautiful! How exciting!!! I also got my piano (also a Kimball, hand-me-down from my parents) for my birthday. I remember thinking I would never learn to play - and 5 years later I'm giving lessons. It's been an amazing blessing for our home and family.
What's that quote??? A wealthy home has a piano for playing good music, a bookcase filled with good books, and a table for the family to gather around? I don't think I have the words exactly right, but I love the sentiment.
Kendra-
You are right, technically. Any "vertical" piano is an upright compared to a grand piano (in which the piano elements are...clearly, horizontal).
However, within the range of verticals there are spinet (shortest), console (a bit taller), studio (taller yet), professional (taller still), & "upright" (tallest, largest).
So when he says "no uprights!" he meant--"no super tall, heavy, monstrously large pianos for me to figure out how to move around for the rest of my life!"
Ours is a console but has a little tag that says "consolette" which I assume was the manufacturer's idea of combining the idea of a console with spinet.
JNew-inspiring! Maybe I'll get good enough to teach someday!!
Im thinking... piano lessons?
I am so excited for you! I have sort of learned in the past - I'm at about the same level as you - and we would love to find such a bargain! I think we are going to bring home Doug's parents' standing keyboard. What a great thing for you to have in your home! Happy birthday!
