Creative Firestorm

Over the last few months,
J's creative juices have really started
flowing more frequently.

And more
dramatically,
colorfully,
and vocabularily (ironic that is not a word, no?).

J (4 1/2) drew this picture today
& then told me what was going on:

J's artwork storyboard 01.18.13

This is not a direct quote, but basically this is how he described his artwork this morning:
There is a truck who was driving along--and there is lots of green grassAs the truck was driving, there was a box that fell out. The box has a ball in it. Above the truck are big blue clouds and the sunshineAlso--these green arrows show the way. The blue circle shape (on the left) is a snowball that is melting on the side.

I was fascinated that not only was it a picture, but there was an event that was taking place--movement, direction, melting, falling--he had a specific way of describing it. He has been doing these drawings with specific stories for awhile now, it is just so fun to watch him progress in his creative expression.

He seems to be a natural at describing, sharing, and dramatizing. At a certain stage, we started asking J to tell us a story after we told him one (bedtime routine). For a long time, the stories were a type of imitations of ones we told. Over the last several months, bedtime stories have become more original, unique, and entertaining. He is trying out new words and making up his own story lines.

Last night the story was about a teeny tiny starfish (I will paraphrase)--"so small that people stepped on him with their toes. He wanted to be bigger and so one day a magic man with a tall hat used a magnifying glass to see him because he was so tiny. He told the magic man he wanted to be bigger, so the man "slapped him with a stick" and he got bigger. He was so happy. The people walked by and said "wow! You are bigger now!" And no one stepped on him with their toes anymore. The end."

I listened to every detail with a huge smile on my face and as soon as we were finished with the bedtime routine I rushed to ask Trevor if he had told him that same story before. He said he hadn't...it was authentically his. Story time has become more vibrant and alive through his imagination...and it is beautiful to watch.

If you have 3 minutes and 2 seconds,
you can experience the magic for yourself!

This is a completely new story from J
earlier this evening:

Afterwards, I asked him what "delicate" meant.
He said "I don't know...what does it mean?"
Hilarious.

Love that kid,
and we are loving our new
& inventive story times!

I've started a new "Story Time" of my own on my blog--check it out: HERE.

love the video, but that drawing is very cool too...he may be an illustrator...a writer, a director!

That's adorable! When Georgia was 4, she had a whole story about "the bleeding princess." It was very elaborate, and went on for days at a time, with her picking up where she left off without skipping a beat. It's so amazing to watch them connect the dots! Never mind the story was about a bleeding princess...that's a whole other issue! :)

It's so fun and amazing to see the things they say and do as they grow and learn!
