Double Your Find

Trevor texted me to call him when I woke up on Monday morning.

He never does this (asks me to call him at work), so I imagined conversations like these:

*Cue dream sequence music/lighting*

Me: "Hi! What's up?"
Him: "Good news--I'm getting a big fat raise and I'm only going to have to work 2 days a week!"

or

Me: "Hi! What's up?"
Him: "Ready to move? They've got us set up with a position in Hawaii!"

or

Me: "Hi! What's up?"
Him: "Tell me what you think about this: they've offered me an all-expense-paid summer position in Portugal--?"

With these dreamy conversation ideas dancing in my head, I gave him a call.

Here's how it really went down...

Me: "Hi! What's up?"
Him: "Are you awake?"
Me: "Yes..."
Him: "Are you out of bed yet?"
Me: "No..."
Him: "Well before you go anywhere this morning, do you mind checking out the trash pile at the end of the street? Someone has left a bike trailer out there--go see if it's any good.
Me: "Huh?"
Him: "It looked like it was in good shape. If it is, bring it home & put it in the garage."
Me: (all visions of grandeur knocked out the window) "Oh...hm. Ok. I'll check it out, thanks."

SO, I walked myself down there & sure enough--a bike trailer sitting out with a stroller, a mattress, and some other things piled together with their weekly trash. I asked the lady at the apartment if there was anything wrong with the thing--she said it was just missing the hook up from the trailer to the bike. Not too shabby--and! It is a DOUBLE trailer.

So I pulled it behind me back to our apartment, I felt very much like my parents...who are pros at finding gems on the side of the road. This was my first "dumpster dive" as it were and it was kind of exciting. I was excited about the possibilities the trailer offered and especially that it was a double seater.

I stuck the thing in the garage and went on with my day. When Trevor got home we took a family walk & ended up at the store down the street (that has everything). We found ourselves in the bikes/bike trailer isle and checked them out. Ours looked almost exactly like the one they had there for $110! AWE.SOME.

Then we made the doubly exciting discovery of the day...

...
...
...

It converts into a DOUBLE JOGGING STROLLER!!

This was great news for several reasons:

A) I love my jogging stroller for J and would really really like one for the two boys together (not that I jog all over with it but going on a walk with a jogger is wayyy better than with an umbrella stroller!)

B) Um...we got it for FREE

C) We don't have bikes anyway

Trevor cleaned it up (aka sanitized it T-Dawg Style), and we are ready to roll!
(Actually we do have to buy a couple of minor parts, but other than that, it's PERFECT)

J gave it his stamp of approval--what a find!

Oh my gosh!! What a sweet find! I cannot believe they were just throwing it away. We have one and we use it ALL THE TIME! They are awesome. You are going to love it

That is incredible. I am NOT good at finding those kinds of things. I have a double trailer for the bike but I only wish it converted to a stroller too. It's so hard to power walk with a regular stroller. PS- you will get bikes down the road anyway and you can all go riding as a family! Score!!

That's hilarious and awesome!! I have conversations like that in my head all the time. I'm glad yours ended up positive- though it did not include a move to Hawaii :)

Yes! This is the type I have (and I've never hooked it up to a bike). It's really nice to use on walks... or maybe even a jog!... since the wheels absorb the impact so much more than a regular stroller. And two seats is too perfect!

With your luck, there will be bikes out there next week. That is so awesome! AND WHYYYYYY do people do dumb things like that? It is missing a couple of parts- aaww just throw it away. Your grandparents would be having a heart attack. If you don't like the frugral route- how about how UNgreen that is to just toss it?!

We have one for Will. He loves it. It's a double seater as well, so he usually takes along some stuffed animals for the ride. And it works perfectly on the bike trails at the state parks.

I showed him the picture of Jackson peeking through the side window and he said "Hey - my do that!"

Luckily we are hitting biking season soon. We can't wait!

okay, first off, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that last pic of Jackson made me laugh SO hard! What a ham!!

Second, that is so awesome that you acquired such a sweet steal "dumster diving"!! I can't believe that lady was just going to THROW IT AWAY. What a waste that would have been.
Ever heard of the Goodwill, lady?! C'mon!
Maybe I've lived in greener-ville Washington for too long but where I'm from, we don't throw away ANYTHING of value.
Okay, sorry about the rant.

Have fun with your new toy!

You are so funny. You know how to tell 'em. Aren't you so glad he called? Ok, not as as good as Hawaii to be sure... I love when it is the spring large item pickup time. We put out two shabby dressers and were hoping someone would come by and take them. And sure enough, they were gone in a couple of hours. Total free-for-all for a few days, and I love it.
