Treasure Chest Cake

This cake project was truly a labor of love (8 hours total), but definitely worth it!

I made the cake to go along with the theme for our Young Women's New Beginnings night last week--our theme was based on the Proverbs scripture "her price is far above rubies". The focus was on treasuring the YW values, etc.

I had a blast making invites & programs with dainty little ruby gem stickers & have been browsing ideas online for months to prepare for making the cake.

It ended up being 3 layers of 9 X 13 yellow cake, filled in between the layers and on the outside with homemade chocolate buttercream frosting (I've had my chocolate fill for at least...a month or so). I made over 7 lbs of frosting. The lid of the treasure chest is actually NOT a cake. I wanted it to be light enough to stay open, so we created the top out of a cereal box & an oatmeal cannister.
For me, the detail work is the most fun--I had a blast turning these lumps of chocolate into a pretty recognizable treasure chest!
HA.

Trevor helped a lot--he baked the cakes & was central in helping me figure out design, etc. (and saving the cake a few times...!) I really couldn't (wouldn't?) have done it with out his help. The process was tedious but the end result was a hit--everyone loved it!

I wish I could pay you to make creative cakes for my boys' birthdays. I always want to have them for the party but I don't want to make them. Alas, we buy one from Sam's Club. At least I know they always taste good.
