Newport, Rhode Island

We took a day trip to Newport, Rhode Island.
The town is as quaint as any New England historic district: full of colonial character--but we were more interested in the coastal Cliff Walk than the darling town (ok, we were interested in both--but for interest in time, we went for some cliff walkin').

According the the 'visit rhode island .com' website:

Named one of "50 Places of a Lifetime" by National Geographic Traveler, this 3.5-mile picturesque walk wraps itself along Newport's spectacular Atlantic coastline with the crashing surf on one side of the trail and the magnificent Gilded Age mansions on the other. In 1975, the Cliff Walk was designated a National Recreation Trail.

It was windy & cold (thus Jen's scarf became a head covering), but we had a blast walking along the coast.

The Mansions along the trail were a highlight, for sure.

This one was my favorite (and was being prepped for a party--note the catering guy on the ramp)
Some of the mansions weren't very tourist friendly:

We enjoyed them anyway.
Mansions on one side, cliffs & waves on the other--it was fascinating and beautiful!
I love the ocean.
I feel a surge of energy from the waves, and I imagine years of travel and exploration. Cliffs remind me always of Portugal and the seaside culture that is so rich on the Iberian Peninsula. There is something familiar about the sounds of waves crashing...and the sense of something so much bigger than self is very real.

One really fun part about visiting my brother is seeing his strength & ability as a father. He is very good at parenting & has a wonderful relationship with his son. I learn so much every time I am around Joe & Jen--they are excellent parents!

Here are a few Joe & Ian shots:
And a few more from the cliff walk:
Note: I never said I was good at climbing trees.
In fact, I think I've always said that I'm NOT good at it.
Photo proof in bottom left pic above.

Our afternoon in Rhode Island was wonderful. We had fun driving through the Newport city center, and even saw America's Oldest Tavern! While Joe did some geocaching (and we all stayed warm in the car), we even saw a Colonial gentleman giving a tour through the city: cool.

Rhode Island, I like you!

I love that going to Rhode Island, or several of the Tiny States...is a day trip from Woburn. Thanks for the preview of the Cliff Walk. It is now on my list!

We were JUST THERE!
I know exactly where you took all those pics! The "Bad Dog" sign, the crazy tree in front of the mansion, etc etc. I had so many of the same thoughts while i was there... did you tour a mansion?

P.S.- we had thanksgiving dinner at "America's Oldest Tavern". Rustic, dark and candle-lit, it was a fun atmosphere, and the food was good, just nothing special.
