Sweet Cakes

Wilton Cake Decorating Course 3, Class 4

So this was my last class of course 3 and I am going to take a break. I'll pick up again next month with Course 2 then skip another month & then do Course 4. The rotation just works that way...

So! The big finale was a 'wedding cake' kind of experience. I made over 30 roses with Royal Icing (so they get rock hard) & made 6 cakes (3 on the bottom layer, 2 on the top layer, and 1 that fell apart)--it was a busy day!

Thankfully, the boy is an amazing sleeper as long as I keep things relatively quiet (he slept till 12:30pm) so I got a lot done in the morning.

Included in this collage is my class, Mom at class with me (and her first fondant rose), my final product (complete with retro-bright colored roses), and my first fondant rose (white) :
Lots of colors, lots of roses, lots of powdered sugar.

The other big project I did while the fam was in town was the dala horse cake. I bought the pan at IKEA & have been excited about trying it out ever since.

Want to know more about the dala horse? Click here.

My Mom has a nice collection of dala horses, they go with our families' interest in all things Scandinavian ...which goes back to my Dad's two year LDS mission in Sweden. Which also includes my NAME which comes from the swedish word "kara" (with two dots over the first a)...anyway, it was a very fun project--I used several designs to create my own & here it is!

We shared this cake with our friends from church who also have a love for dala horses and such...lots of fun!

Note: I used the entire container of RED food coloring gel. And this is as good as I could get. Talk about frustrating!

It was very cool to see your creativity and skills in cake decorating...and to visit with the couple in your ward...he had served his mission to Sweden before Andrew so they had alot to talk about. He sure spoke good Swedish! ( his wife is from Finland so he has had more practice in country in later days! )

I think that's awesome that you are taking a cake decorating class. It's right up your alley because you are so gifted when it comes to decorating, drawing, sketching, designing, and the like.
It's a great skill to have. You'll not only be able to make stunning cakes for your family but you could make and design cakes for other people and charge a sweet price for them. no pun intended.
